FAQ

What is a PixiePlant?

A pixieplant is a small, living plant (cactus or succulent) which prospers in a small bio-dome. There are air holes on the top and watering holes on the bottom. It is like a small pet you can carry everywhere.

What is the difference between a cactus and a succulent?

Basically, all cacti are succulents, but not all succulents are cacti. The word succulent simply means juicy and fleshy. All succulents have the ability to store water in their flesh. Cacti are succulents with spine cushions called areoles that can bear spines and/or flowers but the plants do not have branches or leaves. Succulents do not have areoles and can have branches and leaves.

How do I water my PixiePlant?

Put your PixiePlant in a shallow plate of water and let it sit there for about 10 minutes. Then, set it on a paper towel and wait for the water in the capsule to disappear.

How often do I have to water my PixiePlant?

It varies by the type of PixiePlant. Succulents usually need more water than cacti. One sign that your plant needs water is if it starts to shrivel up. Cacti should be watered about every 12 weeks and succulents about every 6 weeks.

How much water should I use?

About a tenth of an inch, just enough so that the bottom is covered.

There is water in the capsule. How can I get it out?

Sometimes water gets caught between the bottom and the capsule. The best way to get rid of the water inside is to set it on a paper towel for 5 minutes. This allows the water to be soaked out of the little gap.

What happens if I water my PixiePlant too often?

Too much water can harm your PixiePlant. If you water your plant too often you "drown" it. It starts to grow too fast which weakens the roots and causes them to rot.

What happens if I don't water my PixiePlant for a long time?

Not that much (that's the good thing about cacti). However, you should at least water your PixiePlant when it starts to shrivel up.

Why does my PixiePlant need light?

Like every plant, PixiePlants need light to go through photosynthesis. This is the process by which plants, use the energy from sunlight to produce the "fuel" used by all living things. Photosynthesis uses water and releases the oxygen that we absolutely must have to stay alive. Oh yes, plants need food as well!

How much light does my PixiePlant need?

It is recommended to expose your PixiePlant to light for about 2 hours a day.

Does my PixiePlant need real sun light?

No, you can also expose your PixiePlants to artificial light.

Does my PixiePlant need direct sun light?

No, you don't necessarily have to expose it to the sun directly.

What happens if my PixiePlant does not get enough light?

It will not be able to go through photosynthesis. Usually, it will first start to grow to find its way to light, then loses its color, and finally dies. Isn't that sad?

For how long can I keep my PixiePlant in the capsule?

Basically, until it touches the capsule, either on the top or on the side. The growth of your plant depends on several factors: how tall your PixiePlant was when you received it, how much you watered it, how much you exposed it to light, and the kind of plant. PixiePlants typically stay small enough for your capsule for about 6-9 months.

What makes my PixiePlant grow slower?

Less water

Why is my PixiePlant so small?

The PixiePlants are supposed to bring you joy for a long time. That's why we try to send out smaller plants. That way you can watch them grow and thrive. Sometimes they change color and shape when they get bigger. Isn't that exciting?

Why does my PixiePlant look different than the one on the website?

PixiePlants are real, living plants and therefore unique. Every PixiePlant has its own genetic code, so no Pixie will exactly look like another one. It's just like with us humans.

Are PixiePlants real?

Yes, PixiePlants are real plants.

Why is there loose soil in my capsule?

Sometimes, when the soil is getting really dry and the capsule is held upside down some soil can fall out of the bottom through the ring. Usually, the roots of the plants hold the soil together pretty well but shakes and bangs and "heavy" use of the capsule can loosen the soil.

Can I clean the inside of my PixiePlant capsule?

Yes you can. Just twist the bottom of the dome and pull gently until the dome comes off. Gently blow into the dome or use a tissue to wipe it clean. Just put the capsule back onto the bottom once you finished cleaning it.

Can I cut the spikes of my PixiePlant?

Yes you can. Just take off the dome like described above and cut the spikes with a little pair of scissors. It shouldn't hurt the cactus.

How do I re-plant my PixiePlant?

Before you re-plant make sure to not water your PixiePlant for a couple of weeks so that the soil is dry. First, twist the bottom of the dome and pull gently. Use a toothpick to lift the plastic ring. Pull the plant and soil gently out of the bottom. Cut the plastic ring to remove from plant. Done!

When do I know if I need to re-plant my PixiePlant?

You can re-plant your PixiePlant whenever you want but it makes sense to wait until it's outgrowing it’s capsule. You can tell your PixiePlant has outgrown it’s home when it begins to touch the top and/or the sides of the dome.

The ring inside the bottom is loose? Can I fix it? Why did that happen?

Yes. Just twist the bottom of the dome and pull gently until the dome comes off. Then carefully push the ring back into the bottom of the capsule. This happens due to differences in temperature and heavy use.

My PixiePlant shriveled up and is very small. What happened?

If your Pixie shrivels up it is because of 2 reasons: it either needs water (usually a sign of succulents) or it is dying because it didn't get sufficient light. Make sure you expose it to light at least 2 hours per day.

Which kind of soil should I use to repot my PixiePlant?

You can get cactus soil from any hardware or flower store.

Why did my PixiePlant die after I removed it from its bio dome and put it in nice, fresh cactus soil?

This sometimes happens because of so called "transplant shock". Even though you carefully removed the Pixie from its dome it might die after repotting it. There is unfortunately nothing you can do about it.

Is a PixiePlant dangerous?

No, PixiePlants are not dangerous. Just make sure that you don't get poked by its spikes. That might hurt a little.

Is a PixiePlant suitable for children?

PixiePlants are suitable for children age 3 and up.

Oh no, my PixiePlant has babies! How can that happen?

Sometimes, PixiePlants can have more than one seed in the pot which hedge a long time after the plant is bought. You can either remove it or show it off to your friends!

Why does my PixiePlant grow so fast?

That usually happens if you water your PixiePlant too much and too often. Please remember that too much water leads to rotten roots and your PixiePlant dying.

The spikes of my PixiePlant are touching the capsule. What can I do?

You can actually play hair cutter. Take the capsule off the bottom and trim your little friend’s spikes.

Some leaves of my PixiePlant are turning brown! Why does that happen? What can I do?

Like a lot of plants, some PixiePlants have leaves which grow out and die off after a while to make room for new, fresh ones. That's just normal. To make your Pixie look pretty again, just remove the dome and carefully cut the dried leaves with a little pair of scissors. Your PixiePlant will look like new!

My capsule has scratches. What can I do?

Unfortunately, scratches can occur from heavy use. You can try to use a scratch remover but we recommend getting a new capsule.

What's the size of a PixiePlant?

A PixiePlant is 1 inch in diameter and 1.8 inch in height.

What can I use my PixiePlant for?

Key chain, purse accessory, earrings, car accessory, Christmas present, birthday present, graduation present, father's day, mother's day, prize for a competition, Christmas tree hanger, give away, party favor, novelty gift, decoration, science project, educational gift, store decoration

What can my PixiePlant do for me?
